ABOUT THE AUTHOR

One of the more interesting revelations in my column this week was that City Council Member Beth Gottstein's aide Jim Giles is Steve Glorioso's main go-to guy on the 22nd floor of City Hall -- the City Council offices.

Several emails revealed that Glorioso uses Giles to distribute information for the purpose of pitting elected city officials against one another. Here's one where he has Giles distribute negative press clippings Council Member Deb Hermann to several of her colleagues

Glorioso also uses Giles as a source of dirt on Council members. In this email, for instance, he solicits info from Giles about Council Member Deb Hermann. Here's one where he's trolling for the skinny on a new appointee to the TIF Commission.  In another he refers to Giles's own boss as "too strange."

Giles also gives Glorioso V.I.P. service on city issues. In one email dated a little over a year ago, Glorioso asked for information about a road issue. He got a thorough response from Giles just two days later.

This might come as a surprise to some residents of the Fourth District who have told me that they have had their phone calls and emails go unreturned by Gottstein's office.

But that's not all.

Giles also provides translation services for Glorioso -- on City time and computers.

You see, Glorioso recently bought a vacation home in the lovely mountain resort town of Oaxaca, Mexico. He doesn't speak Spanish, so he sends his correspondence to Giles for him to translate.

Here's one. And another. And another.

There's actually so many of these, it would be ridiculous to post them all.

And here's one where he asks Giles to water his plants -- after checking to see if Council members have car allowances.

What's up with Beth?
Council Member Beth Gottstein actually does need to speak publicly about this. She has already come to be seen as easily-led, but this suggests she's allowing herself and her Council position to become a platform for mean-spirited low-lifes.

Speak up, Beth -- are you paying attention, or are you okay with this?
